Research
The Cancer Council Queensland invests significantly in cancer research as part of our commitment to reduce the impact of cancer, especially the suffering it causes to individuals and their loved ones.
The Viertel Centre for Research in Cancer Control was established in 2002 to advance our knowledge and understanding of how to prevent cancer, how to diagnose cancer earlier and extend survival, and how to enhance quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Within the Viertel Centre for Research in Cancer Control, a prostate cancer research program was established to focus on the needs and outcomes of prostate cancer patients and their families and carers, and this program of research continues to grow and develop.
The Viertel Centre for Research in Cancer Control is uniquely positioned within The Cancer Council Queensland to directly inform the development and provision of services due to its close and direct links internally with the Community Services Department. This liaison allows The Cancer Council Queensland to focus its research on the real needs of cancer patients within the community and ensures the results of our research translate rapidly to address these needs through new programs and improved services.
Over the past decade, The Cancer Council Queensland has developed a strong stream of activities in support of prostate cancer, and in 2006 invested in excess of $1 million into prostate cancer research, education and support.
Our research programs and recent research papers in prostate cancer are overviewed on the following pages. Prostate Cancer Queensland will fund vital prostate cancer research, provide education and support programs for men diagnosed with prostate cancer, their families and the health professionals who care for them.
